A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for a highly-placed Vatican diplomat.
Police in the south-western Ontario city of Windsor were alerted by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police that someone had uploaded child porn onto a social network site from a computer inside a Windsor church. The incident was detected in February and police obtained authority to check internet records which showed the alleged offence apparently took place in late December last year.
Carlo Capella, age 50, is now being sought.
He had been posted to Washington but was recalled by the Holy See in September this year after it learned from the U.S State Department that a member of the Vatican’s diplomatic corps in the American capital might be involved in possible violations of child pornography laws.
How he may have come to be in a Windsor church last December is not clear.
The diplomat is believed to be at his home in Italy and at least one report says the Vatican’s own investigation is being carried out
