Steve Gittus (left) the world's oldest active curler

In Canada's west coast province of British Columbia, in Kamloops, a small city of about 90-thousand souls, there lives a special man. He's a Guiness record holder. His title is the "oldest active curler in the world". Now, across Canada, curling is a popular winter sport. Canadians have often been world champions as a matter of fact. In clubs across the country there are leagues for young curlers, serious competitive curlers, and many leagues for curlers over the age of 55.

Steve Gittus curls on one of those "older" teams, and has been for decades. Having served in the army in WWII and in Korea, he took up the sport as a way to meet people when he was stationed in Quebec City 59 years ago. Steve Gittus is 102 years old.

He said he tried to retire from the sport last year, but the skip (team leader) asked him to stay on. He has a modified broom to push the rock down the sheet so he doesn't have to bend down to throw the heavy stone, but he still does his share of sweeping, and his skip says Mr Gittus can still make the shots.

He now takes a taxi to the rink twice a week as he promised his daughters 2 years ago he would stop driving, a promise he made very reluctantly. He says curling is a great way to keep active, with walking, sweeping and delivering the rock. He says he'll keep doing it until he's 105, then he'll retire.

May we all still "harry hard" at 102.
