CANADA URGED TO IMPROVE MINORITIES' STATE

A United Nations report is urging Canada's government to act to reduce the disparity between minorities and the mainstream population. The U.N. Human Rights Council says that several areas need attention including education, employment, income, housing, and participation in politics. The report is critical of Canada for high rates of poverty and joblessness among minorities, adding that many highly-skilled immigrants toil at menial jobs with low pay. Statistics Canada recently issued a study that predicted that Canada's visible minority population could double to 14.4 million by 2031.
