Successful attempt to run trucks on biofuel in Sweden’s North
Biofuel, made of leftovers from the forest industry, has sucessfully been used as fuel for trucks.
Now the ECT research and development centre in Piteå, northern Sweden, is planning to build a larger plant in the area.
The goal is to replace 20 percent of Sweden’s current use of fossil fuel with biofuel.
“The material from the forest could be used as fuel in the trucks that transport the timber,” Magnus Marklund, head of ECT tells Swedish Radio News.
“The way we see it, biofuel is a good alternative even for heavy vehicles.”
About 40 percent of the forest cut every year is never used in the industry. This is usually smaller branches, bark and stumps that could be used to produce biofuel instead.
