Sweden not equipped to cope with some emergencies: defence expert

Swedish_Gripen_jet_fighter_1According to defence experts, Sweden does not have the capacity to offer or receive military assistance in the event of an attack on Sweden or a neighbouring country.

Such capacity is “non-existent” today, according to Karlis Neretnieks, the former head of Sweden’s National Defence College.

Neretnieks told Swedish Radio that Sweden needs an organization that could receive and coordinate air forces or naval units arriving in Sweden in the event of a crisis.

Such an organization would coordinate supplies provision, telecommunications, combat control networks and health care provision, said Neretnieks.

“We would not be able to protect any military units that would come to assist us, since Sweden does not have a functioning air defence,” he added.

Responding to the criticism, Minister of Defense, Karin Enström said Sweden’s ability to provide and receive military support improves as cooperation with the other Nordic countries and Nato expands.
