In central and northern Lapland the berry season is now in full swing. In Muonio the first ripe cloudberries were plucked from the soil two weeks ago, but there are still plenty of unripe berries on the bushes. It seems that this will be a long and fruitful berry season.

This year the cloudberries are good quality and can be found in abundance. In central and upper Lapland this is the busiest period for picking the bright orange delicacy, and pickers are very focused on the job at hand.

At least in the northern town of Sodankylä, Muonio and the fell areas, cloudberries seem to be popping up abundantly this year.

“In open areas there aren’t any cloudberries, but in sheltered parts it’s good,” says Muonio entrepreneur Kirsti Vesikukka. She said last year hardly any cloudberries were available for purchase, but this year there’s no problem.

“The first cloudberries were purchased two weeks ago and we can now say that we’re in the middle of the harvesting season. There are still a lot of unripe berries and plenty more still to come,” says Vesikukka.
