What does the word Métis mean?

Métis
Since the days of New France and during the height of the North American fur trade, interbreeding between indigenous women and whites of European descent favored the emergence of the Métis. According to the 2006 Census, the majority of the 389,000 self-identified Métis in Canada live in the West. As in the case of Inuit and First Nations, the Métis are still struggling for recognition of their ancestral rights.
