The leader of the Official Opposition Liberal Party in Canada’s second most populous province of Quebec won a by-election Monday (December 9) and will now be able to sit in the Quebec National Assembly.
Philippe Couillard was a former health minister in the Liberal government of Premier Jean Charest, but left politics in 2008.
In September 2012, Jean Charest’s government was defeated by the separatist Parti Québécois and leader Pauline Marois. Jean Charest resigned as Liberal Party leader, and on March 17, 2013, Couillard was elected leader of the Liberals. However, he did not have a seat in the province’s National Assembly.
The by-election Monday gave him an opportunity to run for a seat. An election he won easily since both the Parti Québécois and another opposition party did not run candidates against him, to allow him the chance to return to the legislature.
