A five-year project to help homeless people in five Canadian cities has had very encouraging results by focusing on getting housing first for individuals and following up with support services.
The At Home / Chez Soi [in French] project has focussed on homeless people with mental problems in Canada’s three most populous cities of Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, as well as the cities of Winnipeg and Moncton.
The five-year project aimed at providing “practical and meaningful” support to Canadians living with homelessness and mental health problems. The project has just wrapped up and was funded by the Canadian government through the Mental Health Commission of Canada.
Some provincial governments are now continuing funding for some parts of the project.
RCI’s Wojtek Gwiazda spoke to Eric Latimer, the lead investigator of the Montreal portion of the At Home / Chez Soi homeless project, about the project. Latimer is also a health economist, a professor of psychiatry at Montreal’s McGill University, and the editor of the Canadian journal “Healthcare Policy”.
