Meat processor wants to hire Syrian refugees

A meat-processing company is offering to hire Syrian refugees, reports Canadian Press (CP). Several companies in the meat sector have a chronic shortage of workers, in part because of restrictions on the hiring of temporary foreign workers.

The Canadian government has committed to bringing 25,000 Syrian refugees in by the end of February. 6,720 have arrived as of January 5th.

Workers needed in rural areas

“We would be very pleased and honoured to be part of the solution in terms of  helping find employment for the Syrian refugees,” said Rory McAlpine, a senior vice-president at Maple Leaf to CP. “We have jobs available.”

One problem is that many of the refugees will be settled in large cities, but the employment needs of the meat sector are in smaller centres. CP notes Maple Leaf has experience hiring foreign workers. The company translates safety information into several languages and is willing to help employees learn to speak English.
