Canada’s east and west coast are must-see’s according to the National Geographic’s travel editors. In the “Best of the World 2013" Canada has two destinations listed: the Great Bear Rainforest in British Columbia, and Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island on the east coast.

Cape Breton is home to one of the most spectacular drives in the world, weather permitting! If the fog rolls in you won’t see much of the beauty along the 298 kilometer Cabot Trail that circlesthe northern part of the island. But it is bound to be well-travelled in 2013 as it will be the 300th anniversary of Ile Royale, as it was known when the French first settled here. Scottish and Irish people were the next settlers and now the mix with the native Micmac people makes for a lively culture.

In British Columbia, there’s over 300 kilometers of coastline at the edge of the world’s largest intact temperate rain forest. Red cedars and Sitka spruce tower above the large grizzly bears, that give the area its name. It’s also home to the rare ivory-colored Kermode Bears. Perhaps the editors are suggesting a trip soon as the region is currently at the center of a battle over pipelines to bring Alberta oil to western ports. A decision on the pipelines is expected this time, next year. (ck)
