Fort McPherson RCMP investigating cause of Wednesday’s accident

A fuel tanker that rolled over near Fort McPherson, N.W.T., on Wednesday morning released 5,003 litres of fuel oil into the environment, according to the N.W.T. government’s spill tracker.

The accident, which occurred at about 10 a.m. Wednesday, caused an hours-long closure of the Peel River ferry that day.

Fort McPherson RCMP provided traffic control, while crews from the territory’s Department of Environment and Climate Change worked to clean up the spill, RCMP said in a Thursday news release.

RCMP say the driver of the fuel tanker sustained “minor injuries” during the accident, and was transported to Inuvik for further medical care.

Fort McPherson RCMP are investigating the cause of the accident, the release said.
