Qikiqtarjuaq, Nunavut
Weather: Windy and a bracing -25c
Qikiqtarjuaq may mean ‘Big Island’ in Inuktitut, but it’s actually a rather small landmass situated in the Davis Straight between Canada and Greenland. There’s apparently a lovely view of Baffin Island from our hotel. So this morning I woke up eager to see it.
A local Inuk hunter was hanging around the hotel common room, so I asked him if the mountainous terrain on the other side of the sea ice was in fact Baffin Island.
‘Baffin Island?’ he said looking out the window and appearing completely bored. “I don’t know anything about Baffin Island,” he said laughing. “All I know is that we’re Qikiqtarjuaq here and that over there is Canada.”
