‘Climate smart’ beef on the way to stores in Sweden

Traditional beef production has a negative effect on the environment, with food responsible for up to 25 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. Christel Cederberg of the Swedish Institute for Food and Biotechnology tells Swedish Radio News that new methods are required to reduce these effects.

Sweden’s Ministry of Agriculture is financing a project to produce beef which can be labelled as climate-friendly, which involves satisfying some 15 new rules.

So far, however, only one of the country’s meat producers has chosen to change its production so its beef can be certified under such a system.
