Spanish slug invades northern Sweden
The Spanish slug, a large dark slug with a big appetite for anything which can grow in a garden, is gaining ground in northern Sweden.
Known as “murder slugs” in Sweden, the hungry creatures have previously not been able to survive the harsh winter in the northern part of the country. But now they have been spotted as far north as Umeå and Vilhemina, according to Swedish Television News.
In the north, there was a great deal of snow but little frost in the ground last winter, allowing the slugs to make it through the winter, explains Ted von Proschwitz, slug and snail expert at the Gothenburg Museum of Natural History.
