Vibrant swamp life in Lapland
The first peatland conservation land survey has now been completed. The widest and most diverse bog life was found in Lapland, the land of many fens.
Lapland and eight other provinces made preparations for a peatlands conservation programme survey last summer. The results of the first study have now been released, revealing a riot of natural activity within Finland’s swamps.
In all, 340 bogs were studied, covering a surface area of around 34,000 hectares. Individual areas of study ranged from a handful to hundreds of hectares. Each of the swamps yielded a valuable reason for protection.
The land survey will continue next year, across the entire protection programme area. The programme relates to areas that have been selected as being of national importance and in need of protection.
