Fallen tree responsible for power outage in two N.W.T. communities, power corp says
Multiple city-wide outages were reported throughout the weekend
A tree hit a power line at Snare Hydro, triggering the first of a series of power outages Sunday in Yellowknife and Behchokǫ, the Northwest Territories Power Corporation says.
On Sunday night, the power corporation posted to Facebook that power had finally been fully restored to both communities. The announcement came after numerous outages that started Saturday evening and lasted most of the day Sunday.
The power corporation said it is investigating “all of the factors” that contributed to the power outage, including why it took so long for the backup diesel generator to start running after hydro went out.
It said it will provide more details as they become available.
Northland Utilities tweeted about the generator issues at about 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, while the city was in the midst of its second outage of the weekend.
The first outage was reported at about 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Power was restored on Saturday in just under an hour, but the Northwest Territories Power Corporation tweeted power remained out in Behchokǫ̀.
On Sunday, power went out again in both communities in the morning and flickered on and off throughout the day.
