The mercury dropped to -27.3 degrees Celsius at the Tulppio observation station in Savukoski on Thursday, marking the coldest temperature recorded this fall, according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI).

This reading surpassed the station’s previous night’s low of -27.1 degrees, which had been the prior record.

Finland experienced significant temperature differences on Thursday. According to the FMI, the temperature in Kaisaniemi, Helsinki, reached a high of 6.8 degrees, resulting in a difference of more than 34 degrees compared to the reading in Savukoski.

This month Finnish Lapland, however, saw the highest November temperature in nearly 50 years.

Meteorologists say Finland can expect to see more contrasts in weather conditions between the northern and southern parts of the country this weekend as the Arctic Ocean feeds cold air into northern Lapland, while the North Sea pushes mild air towards southern Finland.
