Finland registers coldest night of the winter on Sunday — minus 38.2C
Finnish Lapland was especially chilly this weekend.
The coldest temperature of this winter season, so far, was recorded by a weather station in Tulppio on Sunday — where the mercury plunged to a bone-chilling minus 38.2 degrees Celsius.
The Tulppio station is located near the town of Savukoski, in the northeast of Finland.
It was a chilly night across Finnish Lapland, with weather stations in Kittilä, Sodankylä and Inari registering temperatures of between minus 34 and minus 37 degrees Celsius.
Lapland, like many parts of Finland, is seeing temperatures fluctuating between extreme cold and relatively mild, according to Jari Tuovinen of the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI).
“Temperatures are changing very quickly now. Today [Monday] it is already milder, but tomorrow [Tuesday] the wind will turn eastwardly again and the freezing cold will intensify,” Tuovinen said.
According to the FMI’s long-term forecasts, conditions around Christmas are expected to be mild, with temperatures in Lapland expected to hover around zero degrees Celsius.
