Man charged with firing an air rifle at police after weekend standoff in Iqaluit

Suspect faces multiple charges including assault with a weapon and uttering threats. A man involved in a police standoff in Iqaluit on Saturday is facing multiple charges, including firing an air rifle at an officer.

RCMP issued a news release on Monday detailing the incident which prompted a shelter-in-place advisory on Saturday from about 1 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. The advisory was rescinded after one man was arrested.

The incident involved crisis negotiators and an emergency response team from Ottawa.

The suspect is facing multiple charges including assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon, uttering threats, using an imitation firearm, five counts of firing an air rifle at a peace officer, and breach of probation.

The man remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Iqaluit on Oct. 21.
