For over two years now, Jeff Ashby has been bringing in his record player, on occasion, to the Hay River library to play some classic tunes for those who come in.

Fittingly, on its final day before closing on Friday, Ashby and his music collection were there to set the tone for the afternoon.

The library isn’t closing forever. The town is in the process of sorting out who will oversee operations in the future, after the current oversight committee was dissolved on Thursday.

Hay River says goodbye to its library — for now.

The farewell event was also held to celebrate Hay River’s head librarian, Marny Twigge, retiring and her work in the community to date.

Along with music, there was cake to mark the occasion. Residents came and brought their well wishes for the library and staff. Many left with a few extra books to take home with them this time around.
