Alaska Highway reopens near U.S. border in Yukon
The Alaska Highway has reopened north of Beaver Creek, Yukon, after an earlier closure due to flooding on the road.
Brittany Cross, a spokesperson for the territory’s highway department, said just before noon on Monday that the road was again open to traffic.
Officials closed the highway from the U.S. border to Canada’s Beaver Creek customs office a day earlier.
Meantime, several other roads across the territory were being affected by flooding and washouts on Monday, including the Robert Campbell Highway which was closed in the Coffee Lake area. Cross said there was also water on the highway between Faro and Ross River, but it was still passable in that area as of Monday at noon.
She advised motorists to check 511Yukon for the latest road conditions, and to let people know of their travel plans.
“We’ve got crews actively monitoring conditions and responding where they can do so safely and effectively,” she said.
“We’ve had so much snow this winter … and with the melt that we’re now seeing, those conditions on the road are changing pretty quickly.”
