Fire in Naujaat, Nunavut, burns materials intended for public housing
Nunavut Housing Corporation says it’s not yet clear whether damaged materials will affect project timeline
A fire in Naujaat, Nunavut, has damaged construction materials intended for public housing in the community, though the territory’s housing corporation says it’s too soon to say whether that will affect the project’s timeline.
A fire near the hamlet’s waterfront broke out Wednesday night. In an email, Naujaat’s senior administrative officer Chantal Pelletier said the community’s fire department responded to the fire right away.
The Nunavut Housing Corporation (NHC) said the construction materials were intended for an eight-unit public housing project.
In an email, a spokesperson said officials are waiting for the fire chief’s report and working with the project contractor and local authorities to assess the extent of the damage.
The eight-plex is scheduled to be completed in June 2027.
“It is too early to determine how the fire will affect that timeline,” the spokesperson wrote.
A spokesperson with the RCMP said in an email that police have no information to share about the cause of the fire or whether they’re investigating.
