Each individual licence permits the killing of one adult elk and two calves. A total of 50,000 elk will meet their end during the season which extends until the end of the year.

Preventing road accidents involving the animals was cited as one of the reasons for an extensive cull of the elk population during the last decade.

Some 21,800 licences to kill white-tailed deer have also been granted. This is some twelve percent fewer than last year.
