Ski event in Finland’s North cancelled: weather to blame

Levi's black run was still green on Thursday morning. Photo by Pia Tuukkanen, YLE.The opening event of the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup, slated for mid-November at the Levi ski resort in northern Finland, has been cancelled.

Competition General Secretary Mikko Saarinen said the lack of snow and mild forecast made the decision inevitable.

The international Skiing Federation will decide this weekend where the event will be held. Saarinen says a new venue will be difficult to find, because snow cover is poor or non-existent at ski resorts across Europe and Scandinavia.

The competition runs in Levi have no snow at all at present, thanks to the warmer-than-usual autumn weather in Finland’s northern province of Lapland.
