Torrential rains, high-speed winds and even hail are expected to accompany today’s thunderstorm front. The Finnish Transport Agency warns that tires are more likely to aquaplane during hard rains, and that visibility will worsen.

A powerful thunderstorm front is moving across the country starting in the west. The elongated front will travel across the country towards the north-east, reaching the Capital Region-Jyväskylä-Lapland axis by the afternoon and the eastern border by nightfall.

”The front will bring with it torrents of rain, hail showers, powerful thunderstom wind gusts and even dangerous downbursts,” Yle meteorologist Kerttu Kotakorpi says.

Winds blowing at more than 25 meters per second will hit the regions of Pirkanmaa, Central Finland, Northern Savonia, Kainuu and Ostrobothnia. Rains of more than 30 millimetres are also expected in these areas.

When you hear thunder, it is wise to seek shelter.
“If you hear rumbling or see a flash of lightning, head indoors,” Kotakorpi says. “An extra precaution to take is to collect furniture and other items from out of the yard or balcony.”

The FTA warns of poor visibility and driving conditions due to the stormy weather.
