Finnish Arctic records warmest temperature of summer 2011

Photo: YLEFinland’s past summer was the warmest in over 100 years. The hottest weather was recorded in Ylitornio, a town of almost 5,000 people in Lapland in the Finnish Arctic. On June 10, the town recorded the season’s record high of  32.8 C.

Each summer month this year was warmer than average, with June seeing an unusual heatwave across the country. Equally warm June temperatures were last recorded in Finland in 1974.

The hot weather came with extra precipitation. The country has experienced more rain than usual in 2011, including heavy downpours.
