Cracks nearing Kiruna town centre

Part of Kiruna town centre, in Sweden’s Arctic, will have to move to another location in less than seven years’ time – far earlier than originally planned – due to mining operations cracking the foundations of buildings, reports Swedish Televion’s North News. The news came as a shock for the town’s mayor Kristina Zakrisson.

“This is completely new for me. It’s a bit hard to take care of town planning when you don’t get information in good time,” she told Swedish Radio.

A spokesperson for the state mining company LKAB, which dominates the town’s skyline and labour market, said that the new time period for the move is within “margins of error” for predicting the pace of erosion.
