New wolf hunt in Sweden this winter

A wolfdog is seen during a demonstration against a recently sanctioned wolf hunt, in central Stockholm on February 6, 2011. The hunt follows a 2009 decision by the Swedish parliament to limit the wolf population in Sweden, which had been on the brink of extinction until recently. The move has sparked criticism from environmental groups, as well as the European Union, which launched legal action against the country on Thursday. AFP PHOTO/JONATHAN NACKSTRAND The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency is to allow a wolf hunt this winter, according to Swedish Radio News.

Permission is to be given to kill a total of 18 wolves from nine wolf territories.

The hunt will take place over the next few weeks, before the mating season begins. The agency has previously said any wolf hunt would be aimed at killing specific animals though to be in-bred. This comes following criticism from the European Commission against a larger hunt.
