Minister Heidi Hautala at the Talvivaara mine.i Image: Minna Heikura / Yle Heidi Hautala, the minister with responsibility for state ownership, met with senior management at the Talvivaara nickel mine in eastern Finland on Friday.

Hautala stressed the responsibility of the company to find solutions to its current environmental and production problems.

In Hautala’s view, neither can the state owned Solidium company shirk its responsibilities for Talvivaara’s problems. Solidium is one of Talvivaara’s largest owners.

Enviromental problems were high on the agenda of Hautala’s talks regarding the future of the mine. In her view, risk management problems, negligence and a wet summer had all contributed to the mine’s problems.

The Talvivaara Nickel Mine hit the headlines again last November following a toxic leak from a waste pond.

Earlier this week, Talvivaara announced it was laying off 184 workers for a period of 90 days this spring.
