Overnight temperatures drop below freezing in Finnish Lapland

The coldest temperature of the night was recorded near the town of Kittilä, where the mercury dropped to -5.3 degrees Celsius.

Temperatures froze across much of Finnish Lapland on Sunday night and into Monday morning.

The coldest temperature of the night was recorded near the tourist resort town of Kittilä, where the mercury dropped to -5.3 degrees Celsius. A similar reading was registered in Muonio, where the temperature was -5.2 degrees at 7am.

This was the second night in a row of sub-zero temperatures in Finnish Lapland, as the weather station near Muonio recorded a reading of -4.4 degrees in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Despite the chilly overnight conditions, daytime temperatures in Lapland are predicted to rise to around 15 degrees Celsius on Monday. In southern Finland, highs of up to 20 degrees are expected.
