Frigid weekend ahead, Lapland braces for -35°C
Finland will experience freezing weather throughout the long weekend leading into Epiphany on Monday.
Snow showers are expected mainly in central areas on Friday evening, with temperatures ranging from -5 to -10 degrees Celsius in the south and -30 degrees Celsius in Lapland.
A weak low-pressure system will impact the country over the weekend, according to Yle meteorologist Aleksi Lohtander.
Saturday will see little change in the weather. In Lapland, temperatures could drop to -35 degrees Celsius in clear areas, while the southern coast may see temperatures near freezing. However, temperatures will remain below freezing nationwide.
On Sunday night and into the morning, North Karelia may see a few centimetres of snow, while the rest of the country will remain mostly dry. The coldest temperatures in Lapland will begin to ease as cloud cover increases, though temperatures in the south will stay below freezing.
On Monday, scattered snow showers are possible. Late in the evening, a rain and snow system will move in from the southwest, bringing snow and potentially some rain.
