Swedish glaciers are still melting — but by less than last year

In the Arctic in Sweden’s far north, global warming is happening three times faster than in the rest of the world. Kebnekaise is home to Sweden’s two highest peaks.   • Sweden’s glaciers are still shrinking, but this year’s melt was much smaller compared to 2024’s record.
  • Glaciologist Nina Kirchner from Stockholm University has been involved in measuring the glaciers, and says heavy snow cover protected them from this summer’s heatwave.
  • But even though this years recorded melt is less, she says the glaciers are still getting smaller and smaller.
