Industrial boom in northern Sweden linked to rising prostitution risks

- Large industrial projects that attract many workers from abroad increase the risk of prostitution in the local community, according the Swedish Gender Equality Agency.
- Part of the problem is that people coming from abroad may not be aware that it is illegal to buy sex in Sweden, says Paulina Bolton, an advisor at the agency.
- “I think there needs to be a responsibility for the companies to make it clear what is legal and not in Sweden,” she says.
