Gwich’in Tribal Council postpones annual general assembly
Council says more time needed to finalize financial documents
The Gwich’in Tribal Council has postponed its annual general assembly scheduled for next week.
In a news release Thursday, the council said it needs more time to finalize some financial documents.
The meeting was meant to start next Wednesday in Fort McPherson.
New dates and details on how to participate are yet to come. The release said those will be shared as soon as possible.
“The decision to postpone was carefully considered in light of the important business conducted at the annual general assembly,” states the release.
Past council meetings have had financial-related troubles too.
At last year’s meeting, the council said it wouldn’t be releasing audited financial statements — a routine part of annual general assemblies.
The council largely blamed the situation on delays getting financial information from the Gwich’in Development Corporation (GDC), which is wholly owned by the tribal council, alluding to “failures with the GDC” that “obstructed completion of its audited statements.”
