German canoeist missing in the Yukon found dead on river

Police say remains found nearly 2 weeks ago match those of Dominic Bandorski

Dominic Bandorski, a German adventurer who went missing while on a solo canoe trip in the Yukon in June, has been found dead.

A news release from Yukon RCMP and the coroner’s office on Tuesday says human remains were found on the Yukon River on Aug. 6, about 23 kilometres from where the Teslin and Yukon Rivers meet.

RCMP say forensic identification, completed Aug. 17, matched the remains to Bandorski.

The 31-year-old man’s canoe trip began at Johnsons Crossing, Yukon, on June 4, police said.

He was reported missing a week later, on June 11. That’s when police said a capsized canoe was located on the Teslin River. Camping gear, a satellite communication device and a life jacket were also found near the overturned vessel.

According to RCMP, a helicopter, boats and ATV were used in the search. A police service dog team and search and rescue volunteers were also involved. The public was also asked to keep an eye out.

Bandorski’s family told CBC News in early July that they had lost hope that their loved one would be found alive. They also expressed frustration, saying they had been mostly left in the dark about the search, or were given conflicting information from police and the German consulate.

Shortly after, police said they were no longer actively searching for Bandorksi as “extensive” efforts in the area had found no sign of him.
