Eight new social housing units have arrived in Behchokǫ̀, officials with Housing N.W.T. said Tuesday.

The eight modular units, built as four duplexes, are expected to be ready for occupancy by December. A final duplex, bringing the total number of units to ten, is expected to be delivered to Behchokǫ̀ by the end of the year.

Housing N.W.T. said in Behchokǫ̀, most people on the community’s social housing waitlist want one-bedroom units.

This is part of a territorial initiative to build 98 housing units for single occupants, in duplexes and fourplexes, across nine N.W.T. communities by March 2028. The work is part of a three-year $150 million investment from the territorial government.

In addition to Behchokǫ̀, the communities of Fort Providence, Tuktoyaktuk, Inuvik, Délı̨nę, Tulita, Fort Simpson, Ulukhaktok, and Fort Smith are slated to receive housing units as well.

The communities included in the project were chosen based on demonstrated need for single-occupant housing, and findings from an assessment on housing needs, which identified a growing need for smaller housing options in the N.W.T.

At the end of August, ten units had arrived in Ulukhaktok by barge, and were expected to be ready for residents in the fall.

Earlier this month, Housing N.W.T. said another ten units were on their way to Fort Providence.

Most of the 98 units are being built by METCAN Building Solutions in Hay River. In early September, officials said work was underway on one of two duplexes that will be built at the K’áhsho Got’ı̨nę Trades Centre in Fort Good Hope.
