21 Swings up again in Montreal

The swings are up!  21 Swings to be exact.  For the third year in a row, Montreal’s Quartier des Spectacles is giving people the opportunity to stop and play, and make music as they swing.

The installation, on an island of grass between two roads, is described on the Quartier’s website as “an exercise in musical cooperation that is half street furniture, half game.”

Each swing represents a different instrument such as a guitar, a piano, a vibraphone or a harp.  And every swing elicits a musical note, the higher the swing, the higher the note.  When several people swing at the same time a melody is produced.

The experience is the work of design-team, Mouna Andraos and Melissa Mongiat, of the company Daily Tous les Jours.

The 30,000 square-foot instrument is open daily from 10 am to 11 pm, but only until June 2nd.  Its popularity, however, with Montreal residents and visitors is sure to guarantee a return engagement next year.
