Susan Pinker is a psychologist, columnist and award-winning author.

In this latest work she explores one of humankinds most basic needs, but one which are suppressing, or at least avoiding more than ever; the need for direct social contact.

Exponents of technology say we’re more in contact with people than ever before thanks to smart phones and internet and so on…but in her book, Susan Pinker points out that our bodies know the difference.

In fact, studies show that people with close personal relationships and a wide circle of acquaintances live longer and healthier because of face to face contact.

Studies show that emails and social media seem like a way to stay in touch, but in fact they do nothing towards a physical body reaction, whereas face to face contact does.

This measurable physical improvement in one’s life through actually being with people, family and friends in person, begins at the very earliest stages of life and continues into the final stages.

So to live a longer life, the Village Effect suggests you should put down the cell phone and spend some “quality time” with someone you are close to.
