They’re calling it a new type of modern day pollution and a new health concern.
The concern comes from the Quebec-based group, the Association Quebecoise pour la Lutte contre la Pollution Atmostpherique (AQLPA-or Quebec association to fight atmospheric pollution)
They’re calling this new form of pollution “electrosmog”. They say we’re being inundated with electronic signals, from radio and tv signals, microwave data and cell phone signals, and which is now increasing as so-called “smart meters” are becoming common.
AQLPA president Andre Belisle says, “We are using all kinds of devices… it’s cellular phones, it’s smart meters, all kinds of antennas around us, and we don’t see it,” he said. “We believe they have an impact on people’s health.”
Dr. Magda Havas, an associate professor of environmental and resource studies at Trent University in Ontario, says, “When smart meters go on a home, people complain. Not everyone, but some percentage of the population complains of the symptoms we develop when we’re electrically hypersensitive.” She points out however that research on electromagnetic hypersensitivity is still in its early stages.
In a related note, health concerns from living close to high-voltage power lines and the accompanying electromagnetic fields (EMF) were first raised back in 1979. Since then, several health agencies and organizations have said that while they cannot dismiss such claims or concerns, to date research has not been able to establish a clear link between EMF and incidence of leukemias or cancers as a result of living close to such power lines.
