Annie Leibovitz has a permanent home in The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. It is the new residence of a huge collection of her photos, thanks to the generous gift from Toronto’s Mintz Family.
As a way to honour their parents, Al and the late Faye Mintz, Harley Mintz said, “my parents have always loved Annie Leibovitz’s photography, how she combines technique with creativity, beauty with controversy, humour with honesty”. He said, “for them, every photograph told a story and, with my mother’s passing two years ago, may father is thrilled to be able to share these ‘stories’ with the people of Nova Scotia.”
Ray Cronin, CEO and AGNS Director, is certainly thrilled to be sharing it with Nova Scotians as well. He said, “the gallery has been actively building its photography collection for the past ten years, but this gift changes the gallery. It’s transformative, this level of philanthropy is truly inspiring.” Ray Cronin described a lengthy process but one that evolved with the co-operation and support of Annie Leibovitz herself.

It will be known as “Annie Leibovitz: Photographs from Her Books – A Gift of the Al and Faye Mintz Family.” Among the more than 2,000 images are the now iconic photographs of John Lennon and Yoko Ono taken hours before his murder, the pregnant Demi Moore and the Blues Brothers and countless others instantly recognizable as Leibovitz work. But there are also hundreds of other images, some never seen before, of Leibovitz’s travels and personal projects.
Ray Cronin says with the size and scope of the gift he can imagine several different exhibits that can be mounted, but a premier is expected this coming fall. It will be a lovely time to visit Canada’s ocean playground.Listen
