Nelson Mandela Park Public School was the scene of a celebration in Toronto today. The students, friends and family from far and wide came to honour the birthday of the man their school is named for.
Mustafa Ahmed, a 16 year-old graduate of the school, recited a poem he wrote for the South African leader who turned 95 today. Ahmed says he is inspired by a the response Mandela gave when Mark Keilburger asked him how he led his people? Mandela said he led from behind.
Lorraine Klaasen and her band performed at the event. Klaasen makes her home in Montreal now, but she is the daughter of Thandie Klaasen, one of Nelson Mandela’s favorite South African singers. Lorraine Klaasen continues the tradition of the Township Music that came out South Africa during the struggle against apartheid.
