In the many lakes north of Thunder Bay in Ontario, there is one that is most aptly named; Surprise Lake is where Matt Taylor was fishing this week when he caught a giant pike, by accident!
He was finished and heading back to shore with his catch, a small fish attached to a stringer, when he felt something tugging at the boat.
Taylor reached over to pull in his fish, and saw a giant pike trailing behind.
“I saw this huge snake. A huge, huge fish,” he said. “So, I put the boat in neutral and I tried to get it into the net. But it was so big that it wouldn’t fold to get into the net.”

Eventually Matt Taylor managed to get the fish into the net, and then into the boat. “I didn’t know what to think,” he said. “It was just, … crazy. I was just in shock.” On shore, Taylor used a rope to get the pike out of the boat.
After having his picture taken with his 1.25 metre prize, Taylor’s mom fileted it into steaks. Taylor said 20 people feasted on the catch and there was still some fish meat left over.
