Spelunkers in B.C. looking for deepest cave in Canada

The Northern British Columbia Caving Club is on a mission.  They are going deep into the earth in northwestern B.C. in search of the deepest cave in Canada.

Bob Rutherford is president of the group, based in Prince George, British Columbia.  He is leading eight club members in the exploration of a large limestone formation on the Taku River, near Atlin, British Columbia

Rutherford estimates the cave could be 1,000 metres deep.  They’ll be equipped with 600 metres of rope, but Bob Rutherford has his doubts.

In an interview with CBC he said, “I don’t think we have enough time, and possibly not enough rope to get to the bottom of it.”

Along with a lot of rope it will take a lot of money.  Rutherford says, “We’re looking at between C$1,500 to C$2,000 per person to get in there.”

The team is heading into cold, dark, damp and dangerous conditions.  But Bob Rutherford says, “A little bit of fear’s a healthy thing, I think.”
