Greenland wants to know which Canadian fishing trawler broke its underwater cables. And to find out, the country’s largest telecom company filed a lawsuit in federal court in Halifax, to have Fisheries and Oceans Canada reveal the truth.
These are the cables that run across the ocean floor. They first allowed people to make overseas phone calls and now make it possible to surf the web.
Despite being laid out on maps, some vessel, or vessels broke Tele Greenlands cables twice last year, just off the coast of Newfoundland.
The company believes a fishing trawler’s gear caused the breaks, halting service to its international customers. Along with the costly downtime, emergency channels such as 911 can be out of servce.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada monitors fishing vessels in the area, but the department will not share information or data that may identify a culprit.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada has yet to file a defence in the case.
