Canada and Ukraine cemented their commitment to each other in speeches by Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Ukraine’s President Poroshenko to a joint sitting of the House of Commons and the Senate in Ottawa on Wednesday (September 17).

The leaders pointed out the historic connection of the two countries and the fact that more than a million Canadians trace their roots to Ukraine.

The two leaders also underlined the need for Ukrainian sovereignty and the threat from Russia.

Northern gannets mate for life, and are normally very protective of chicks. It’s thought that climate change, resutling in ocean warming chased their prey fish away, causing many to abandon nests in an almost unheard of behaviour © Dave Fifield

The large snow-white gannets, with their golden head, long beaks and huge black-tipped wings are exhibiting some very unusual behaviour. Normally gannets are extremely good parents, but this year for only the second time, gannets left their colonies in large numbers, abandoning their chicks

Professor William Montevecchi (PhD) has been studying the seabirds for some 30 years. He is a research professor in the psychology department and with the Biology and Ocean Sciences department at Memorial University in the Atlantic Island province of Newfoundland.

This abandoning of chicks happened for the first time in 2012, when the sea water around the east coast was three to four degrees warmer than normal. This year again the currents around  Newfoundland’s south shore and the gannet colony was also three to four degrees above normal temperatures.

Marc reached Professor Montevecchi in Spain where he is attending a conference wit the International Committee for the Exploration of the Sea.

Lynn looked into a new group called SenseAbility.

It’s a group of executives who have come together to convince other business managers that hiring people with disabilities is actually good for business.

The initiative was launched in 2012 by the late Jim Flaherty, a federal minister of finance who himself had a son with disabilities.

Lynn spoke with Kathy Martin, chair of SenseAbility.
