Ontario’s ‘Sunshine list’ grows

Ontario’s annual Sunshine List grew by more that 13,600 workers over 2013. The list, which includes teachers, nurses, police, and firefighters, is all those who make over C$100,000 a year. In 2014 there were 111,438 public sector workers on the list.

It was brought in by the Conservative government of Mike Harris in 1996 as the Public Salary Disclosure Act.At the time Harris said it served as an important check on the public payroll.

It applies to the Government of Ontario, Crown agencies, municipalities, hospitals, public health boards, school boards, universities, colleges, Hydro One, Ontario Power Generation, and other public sector employers who receive a significant level of funding from the provincial government.

Premier Kathleen Wynn made just over C$209,000 last year, up C$10,000 from the year before. The highest paid person was Tom Mitchell, chief executive of Ontario Power Generation,with earnings of C $1.71 million.
