Rob Ford is undergoing major surgery in Toronto’s Mount Sinai hospital today.
The beleaguered former mayor of Canada’s largest city, reported stomach pain during last year’s hard-fought municipal election. He was forced to take some time away from the campaign for Mayor when it was revealed he had a tumour in his abdomen that was diagnosed as liposarcoma.
Rob Ford then dropped out of the race for Mayor but he did retain his seat as councillor for the ward he has long represented. His brother Doug Ford ran for mayor in his place, but lost to John Tory.
Rob Ford’s alleged drug use and behaviour many found not-becoming-of-a-mayor, put him, and Toronto in the international spotlight, for months, usually as the butt of jokes.
Dr. Carol Swallow is leading the team of four surgeons in a complicated and extensive, potentially life-saving operation that will take 10 hours.
If all goes well it is expected Ford will spend four months recovering from the surgery.
Last week, Mayor Tory said that Rob Ford is “a fighter” and that council was pulling for him as he heads into surgery.
As of this posting the surgery is reportedly all going as planned.
