The Parti Québécois is in the final stage of finding a new leader. Voting has begun to chose among three candidates to lead the separatist party in the only officially French-speaking province of Canada.
The PQ suffered a crushing defeat in the last provincial election, when leader Pauline Marois also lost her seat in the National Assembly in Quebec City.
Party members will vote for either Pierre Karl Péladeau, Alexandre Cloutier or Martine Ouellet.
Péladeau, a billionaire and the controlling shareholder of Quebecor Inc., is considered the front-runner.
Cloutier and Ouellet served in the former government’s cabinet until the PQ lost the provincial election in April 2014.
If none of the candidates receive 50 per cent of the vote on Friday, a second round of voting with the top two finishers will be held next week.
This leadership campaign began with six candidates but three pulled out for either financial or competitive considerations.
