`Forest Light`, a painting by Emily Carr, sold Wednesday night in Vancouver, for C$1.53 million dollars. Pre-sale estimates were in the C$400,000 to C$600,000 range.
From her mature period, Forest Light was one of six Carr paintings that garnered C$2.3 million at the Heffel Fine Art Auction House last night.
The record for a single Carr painting is just under C$3.4 million (premium included) at Heffel`s.
Three Quebec artists works did well. Chant d’été by Paul-Émile Borduas‘s went for $737,500, beating its pre-auction estimate of $400,000 – $500,000.
Jean Paul Lemieux`s La visite sold at $719,800, when it had been expected to sell for $250,000 – $350,000.
La forêt enchantée, a large-scale canvas by Jean Paul Riopelle, drew a final bid of $590,000, following a pre-sale estimate of $150,000 – $250,000.
Perhaps the biggest winner, was this garage-sale find!

The work was found at a garage sale in Ontario, in a box of paintings, acquired for under $200
